What is class 1 license in Alberta?
A class 1 licence is the highest commercial driver’s licence in Alberta. It authorizes the operation of all vehicles in class 2-5, in addition to semi-trailer trucks.
How to get a class 1 license in the city?
Steps To Obtain:
- Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 1 drivers licence you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination.
If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close. - Air Brake Certificate: Proof of your compressed air brake, “Q” support or a course culmination testament from an endorsed air powered brake course is required before a street test can be given. This incorporates drivers of homestead vehicles enlisted as tractor-trailers.
- MELT Program: You must successfully complete training delivered by an City licensed drivers training school.
- Road Test: We can provide a test permit and book your road test. Contact our office for more data or ask a member of our staff to buy your road test. A tractor trailer mix with three or more axles, outfitted with air powered brakes for the street test must be given by candidate.
Effective February 1, 2023: can complete their class 1 commercial road test using an automatic transmission truck. After passing your road test using an automatic transmission truck, a note is placed on your driver’s licence that you can only drive 1 automatic transmission truck. After passing your road test using a standard transmission truck, you can drive both manual and automatic transmission truck. - Medical Exam: A medical form must be completed by your family doctor to insure the safety of you and others around you on the road. Class 2 & 2S license (Professional)
Canada Class 2 license Requirements:
- Minimum Licencing Age: 18
- Probationary Drivers: Not Eligible
- Mandatory Entry Level Training
What can you drive with a class 2 license in the City?
Holders May:
- Operate Buses (excluding school buses)
- Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 3, Class 4 or Class 5 operator’s licence may operate
- Hold a learning of Class 1 and Class 6 for learning only

You must provide a bus with seating capacity exceeding 24 passengers excluding the operator for a road test. If the bus you are driving is equipped with air brakes, you must provide proof of your Q endorsement or have your air brake course completed. - “S” Endorsement: A bus with a seating capacity of more than 24 passengers, excluding the driver. If the vehicle is equipped with air brakes, you must have either take air brake training (Q-endorsement), or a course completion certificate from an approved air brake organization.

What is the cost of a class 2 license in the city?
The Cost of a Class 2 license Plate in Canada is determined by age and the information provided on the driver’s medical:
- Ages 18 – 39: 5 Year license $93
- Age 41: 4-year license $77
- Age 42: 3-year license $60
- Age 43: 2-year license $43
- Age 44: 1-year license $26
- Ages 45 – 62: 3 Year license $60
- Age 63: 2-year license $43
- Ages 64 and over 1-year license $26

Class 3 license (Professional)
Class 3 license Requirements:
- Minimum Licencing Age: 18
- Probationary Drivers: Not Eligible
Holders May:
- Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operators may operate
- Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles
Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles towing a trailer with one or more axles, if the trailer is not equipped with air brakes - Operate Class 2 or Class 4 type vehicles without passengers
- Hold a learning of Class 1, Class 2 and Class 6
Holders May Not:
- Operate a motor vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15, while that vehicle is transporting any person other than the driver
- Operate a motor vehicle to transport passengers for hire Note: Drivers of single-motor vehicles registered as a farm vehicle do not require an air brake “Q” endorsement.

Class 4 license Alberta (Ambulances & Taxis)
What is a class 4 license in Alberta?
In Alberta, a Class 4 driver’s licence allows the drivers to operate specific commercial vehicles, primarily those used for transporting passengers. This licence is essential for taxi drivers, ambulance operators, and small bus drivers.

- Probationary Drivers: Not Eligible

Class 5 driver’s license
Class 5 GDL (Basic)
Class 5 Requirements:
- Minimum Licencing Age: 18 (or 16 with consent of guardian)
- Minimum Learning Age: 14 (Class 7)
- Probationary Drivers: Licence is probationary for 2 years.
Steps To Obtain (Probationary):
- Learner’s Licence: Obtained a Learners licence card (Class 7).
- Road Test: By now you should be ready to take part 1 of the road test. We can book and provide a road test for you.

After you have passed your road test, you are ready to re-class your licence to a Probationary Class 5. Come into our Gold Key Registries office with your learners licence, as well as the document you are given upon completion of your road test; and our friendly staff can assist you.

What comes after class 5 license?
After obtaining a class 5 license, drivers can obtain commercial licenses, which include:
- Class 4: For taxis, ambulances, and small buses (less than 25 passenger)
- Class 3: For trucks with three or more axles and combinations of vehicles without air brakes.
- Class 2: Includes classes 3, 4, 5, and bigger buses, including school buses.
- Class 1: semi-trailer trucks and all vehicles in Classes 2, 3, and 5, excluding motorcycles.
Class 5 GDL Exit (Non-GDL | Advanced)
Class 5 Requirements:
- Minimum Licencing Age: 18 (or 16 with consent of guardian)
- Minimum Learning Age: 14 (Class 7)
- Probationary Drivers: licence is probationary for 2 years.
Non-Probationary Class 5 Holders May Not:
- Operate a motorcycle (except as a learner)
- Operate a motor vehicle with a seating capacity of more than 15 while that vehicle is transporting any person other than the driver
- Operate a motor vehicle transporting passengers for hire
- Operate a motor vehicle equipped with air brakes, unless the operator has an air brake endorsement. The exception would be two-axle air brake equipped vehicles registered in the city as farm vehicles

Steps To Obtain (Non-Probationary):
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have completed 24 months of probationary driving.
- Be suspension and demerit free for at least 12 months.

You are now ready to re-class your licence to a Non- Probationary Class 5 and can have your GDL licence replaced with a full Class 5 driver’s licence.
Class 6 (Motorcycles & Mopeds)
What is a Class 6 operator’s licence may operate?
A Class 6 license holder can operate a motorcycle or moped.
Class 6 Requirements:
- Minimum Learning Age :16
- Minimum Licencing Age : 16
Conditions:
- Must posess a valid Class 6 Learners licence
- While learning, operators must have an instructor 18 years of age or older with a valid Class 6 licence either seated with you or following on another motorcycle or in another motor vehicle.
Requirements for carrying passengers:
- Adequate passenger hand grips
- An adequate passenger seat
- Adequate footrests

Class 7 (Learner’s)
Alberta Class 7 license Requirements:
- Minimum Licencing Age: 14
Learners Licence Holder Conditions:
- Must hold a Learners licence (Class 7) for at least one year, before being eligible for a Probationary Class 5 licence
- Must be accompanied by a fully licenced driver that is not a probationary driver who is 18 years of age or older and is seated next to the driver
- Learners are not permitted to drive from midnight to 5 A.M. and are not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts
- Only 8 demerit points are allowed for learners drivers
- Must have a zero alcohol level
How to get a class 7 license in the City?
Steps To Obtain:
- To start the process of obtaining your Class 7 drivers licence you must first take the written examination.
Come into our office with your 2 pieces of eligible identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination. - If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.
- The applicant must pass an eye examination administered by our friendly staff.
- If you are under the age of 18 years. You must have a parent or legal gaurdian accompany you to obtain your learners permit.
After you have passed your written learners examination, you can obtain a Class 7 licence card.

FAQs
What class is regular driver license?
A regular driver license is class 5. It allows driving of cars, light trucks, motorhomes without air brakes, vehicles towing trailers without air brakes (up to a certain weight limit), mopeds, and recreational vehicles.
What is the difference between class 2 and class 3 licenses?
The difference between class 2 vs. Class 3 licenses is that class 2 licences allow the driving of buses, including school buses and special activity buses, in addition to all the vehicles included in class 3, 4, and 5. On the other hand, Class 3 licenses allow driving trucks with 3 or more axles, and a combination of vehicles without air brakes, as well as the vehicles allowed in class 4, and 5, excluding motorcycles.
